How to Grow Mushrooms

Our 2 DVD instructional video along with the information on these pages will guide you through the entire process of learning how to grow mushrooms, from the most basic method of all, the BRF Tek which requires practically no investment, to the more advanced techniques of working with mycelium on Petri dishes, including saving your species collection to master culture slants.

You'll learn to generate grain spawn, and to use it to inoculate bulk substrates or outdoor mushroom patches. Our section on using straw will have you growing prize-winning oyster mushrooms within weeks. The section on sawdust/woodchip blocks will give you the knowledge you need to grow valuable Shiitake, Maitake, Elm Oysters and many more gourmet edibles and medicinal mushrooms such as Reishi and Hericium (Lion's Mane).

Let's Grow Mushrooms! is ideal for both the experienced cultivator who wants to see the more complicated tasks demonstrated in a visual format, and the beginning mushroom grower who is confused about exactly where to start the whole process. If you're a student, our DVD will help you turn in a show-stopper at the science fair. If you'll take a skillet to school and saute up a batch of your own fresh-picked mushrooms, the wonderful aroma will have all the judges hanging out at your table!

School Teachers

We have a program in place to help your students from ages 12 and up learn how to grow mushrooms at school. This is a great ecology or green science fair project, because your students can collect old telephone books, newspapers, cardboard, and even waste paper from your school's office and other classrooms, thus keeping it out of your local landfill by recycling directly into mushrooms. What other green science fair project could be more fun for your students than recycling their tests and homework into food? Instead of "the dog ate my homework", they'll brag of eating their homework themselves! Contact us for details on this program.

The list of materials you can grow mushrooms on is limited only by your imagination. If it's a wood, paper, or agricultural left-over or waste product, chances are very good that you can grow mushrooms on it. The best part of all is that after the mushroom mycelium has finished its fruiting cycle, the left over phone book, sawdust block, etc., can be simply buried in the ground as a soil conditioner and fertilizer, having been decomposed by the mushroom mycelium.
